New York Nick's plans one boss weekend
Nick Zangari owns and runs New York Nick's, a downtown sports bar and eatery. But Zangari knows there is only one Boss. That would be Bruce Springsteen, the rock 'n' roll bard who has parlayed epic songs about blue collar woes, love gone cold, downbound trains and dreams that don't come true into a millionaire's fortune. Zangari lives for Springsteen. Seen him 24 times - at least once on every tour since 1978. "When I first saw Springsteen live," said Zangari, 44, "I knew that's what live rock and roll was supposed to be like." OK, the chance of Springsteen visiting New York Nick's anytime soon is slim, but here's the next best thing: New York Nick's will host "SpringBreakSteen," April 15-17 at the downtown club, 911 Palafox Place. Don't think it's just Nick spinning his Springsteen bootlegs either. Zangari has lined up former Springsteen drummer Vini "Maddog" Lopez to appear at the event as special guest, along with New Jersey-based Springsteen tribute group, the B-Street Band. Lopez played drums on the first two Springsteen albums, "Greetings From Asbury Park, New Jersey" and "The Wild, the Innocent and the E Street Shuffle" before leaving the Boss right before the recording of 1975's "Born To Run." (He was replaced by Max Weinberg, who now leads the band on "Late Night with Conan O'Brien.") Also performing at "SpringBreakSteen" are three Springsteen tribute artists, including Mark Wright, who recorded "Two Hearts" for the album "Light of Day: Tribute to Bruce Springsteen," which also features performances by Elvis Costello, Nils Lofgren and Cowboy Mouth. Price is $69 for a three-day ticket and includes admission each night, a free buffet each night and plenty of other goodies. Some proceeds benefit 2nd Harvest Food Bank.
